Pershore kept there promotion hopes alive when the depleted squad came back in the final quarter to edge a win at Redditch by 1 point.
Pershore started brightly and a fine individual try by fly half Adrian Hanson opened the scoring. His half back partner Lewis Dolphin converted to give the visitors a 7-0 lead after a few minutes. That was as good as it got in the first half for Pershore as the Redditch pack starved them of possession and were certainly dominating the set peice. Redditch score a 2 tries and a penalty in the first half and went into the break 15-7 up. They were also a man up as Pershore’s number 8 Martin Hope was sin binned for a late challenge.
In the second half Pershore were certainly more aggressive but the momentum was with Redditch who added a penalty and try to their tally and they enjoyed a lead that many thought was too much for the Piddle Park outfit to catch up. However a quick score from Ash White out on the wing, after some neat exchange of passes with centre Matt Cyphus, and then another try on the opposite wing from captain Andy Jenkinson closed the gap to within a score. As the clock ran in to the final 10 minutes Pershore finally stated to show the intensity from a side who are aiming for promotion. Whilst deep in Redditch territory another big carry from Hope was supported by centre Richard Baker who created a gap for Stefan Ellis to score under the posts. Dolphin duly converted to give Pershore a 1 point lead. However a nail biting finish ensued for the visitors. Redditch won a kickable penalty which shaded just wide. However a poor kick from the drop out was collected by Redditch who won another penalty. This the kicked for the corner and opted for a driving line out. Pershore scrum half Dolphin was penalised for pulling down which was punished with another penalty and a yellow card. With time now dead Redditch had to keep the ball in play and took a scrum. They managed to march Pershore back over the line but the number 8 fumbled as he tried to ground the ball and the referee blew for full time with Pershore running out victors 24-23.
Next week Pershore will entertain local rivals Evesham at Piddle Park, 3pm kick off.
