Pershore returned to winning ways with this emphatic win against Southam. The scoreline may not flatter, but this was a performance where Pershore probably dominated possession for 70 % of the match, but unfortunatly, as in the previous week, a last pass, the wrong decision being made, prevented them passing the 50 mark. The foundations of this performance was again with the forwards. With late changes forcing Steve Holmes to play his first game at loose head, it made no difference to Pershores traditional strong scrummage. Evans , Lane and Holmes were up against a huge front row, but their lack of fitness, and technique, meant that the Southam scrummage was always under pressure, which allowed Ed Day , and Chris Copson freedom to disrupt the ball at the back of the scrum. For the first twenty minutes Southam could not get out of their 22, but Pershore contrived to let 3 simple two on one situations to pass, before they finally scored. A succession of forward drives, put Pershore in a strong position, they conceded a penalty, whereupon Sid Hirons, took a quick tap, and the rampaging Karl Evans took the ball at full tilt, and smashed his way over the line to touch down. Dolphin converted. The next twenty was a mirror of the first, Pershore camped in Southams 22 but intense pressure not being converted into points. With the clock ticking down, a powerful scrum on Southams
22 allowed Martin Hope to pick up , brush off two attempted tackles and touch down, 12 nil at half time.
For the first ten minutes of the second half Southam managed to get the their hands on the ball, but a lack of imagination, and a strong defence, meant they could not get on the scoreboard. A line out on the halfway was quickly won by Grace, the ball was sped to Matt Cyphus who chipped ahead through the oncoming defence, he weaved his way through, gathered his own kick, and stormed over for a fine individual try. The last fifteen minutes was a case of Pershore battering away at Southams line only to make a hash of a simple pass, or kick away possesion. For a team like Pershore, that are so comfortable with the ball in hand, and have a set of forwards who can keep the ball through lots of phases of play, it is frustrating to see hard won possesion kicked away aimlessly. On the full time whistle, a simple penalty kicked by Lewis Dolphin completed the scoring. For his work rate, his scrummaging, and his line out support play, the man of the match was Karl Evans. Pershore are away at Bloxwich next Saturday, in the National Senior Vase.
