Pershore second team maintained their lead at the top of the Worcestershire & Herefordshire Merit league division 2 with a well deserved win at Stourbridge Lions thirds.
Pershore were keen to run the ball and try to keep it away from the colossal home pack. The back three certainly showed confidence under the high ball and the ability to beat there opponents for pace at every opportunity. It was winger James Brack who opened the account after beating his opposite winger to score in the corner. Veteran fly half Matt Harwood converted. Soon after the Lions closed the gap with a try under the posts but the kick was missed. Pershore then extended there lead when Lee Smith got on the end of a Harwood pass to score with the provider again adding the extras. With half an hour gone Pershore looked comfortable in controlling the game. Just inside the Stourbidge half centre John Macaulay neatly offloaded to Karl Evans who ran in from 40 metres to score a converted try under the posts. Scrum Half Andy Jenkinson also got his name on the scoresheet with a score in the corner, again converted.
The cliché ‘A game of 2 halves’ fits perfectly. Stourbridge had 9 subs, so as they made all of their replacements the fresh legs made the difference as they scored 4 unanswered tries. However the telling difference on the day was the 100% kicking record from Matt Harwood against the 0% record of the various Stourbridge kickers. Pershore running out worthy winners 28-25.
