Pershore Under Sevens travel a-far to win admiration and make friends.

Pershore U7s made their longest journey of the season so far, and travelled all the way to Redditch on Sunday. With the early morning fog slowly lifting from the surrounding countryside, the seven U7s were split into two teams to face a less experienced Redditch on a dew soaked pitch. The Redditch coaches and players made us very welcome, and provided warm hospitality to compensate for the cold weather.

Game one, team one, saw Jack, Carter and Rowan join together to form a cohesive well oiled machine that managed to show great improvement on previous weeks, with competent passing and defensive work in equal measures. Although outnumbered by the opposition all three showed great composure and successfully managed to win the game. Final score Redditch 4, Pershore 8.

Game one, team two had Olivia, Ben Harry and Nat face the cream of Redditchs U7. The game started well enough with both sides scoring tries, however mid way through the first half the four Pirates began to gel and make some fantastic full length tries whilst keeping a tight defensive ‘fishing net’. The opposition soon found themselves struggling to deal with the pace and started to lag and with Harry making an amazing run through the defence before the final whistle blew at 6 - 8 in Pershore’s favour.

As is now somewhat of a tradition, before the second games began both teams took part in a massive game of bulldog that saw the coaches from both sides diving left and right. No real winner this time but a good excuse to let loose for five minutes.

Game two, team one. The ‘three amigos’ showed no sign of slowing down for their second match with Rowan, Jack and Carter all equally making sure the opposition had to work hard for any points they scored. Blistering fast runs, matched with competent passing and a solid defence meant the outcome was inevitable, another fine win.

Game two, team two. Even with the breeze picking up and the temperature dropping it looked as if nothing could stop team two completing a hugely successful away fixture. All four of them at one time managed to outfox the defence and it was clear to all that their passing game was coming along in leaps and bounds. Even with tiredness kicking in and concentration levels waning, they still managed to maintain a defensive line that was equal to that of Englands. Final score Redditch 5, Pershore 8.

And before the team were rushed to get their post match hotdogs, there was just enough time for one final game of bulldog, with Harry and Nat both running rings around the ‘chasers’. The ultimate honour goes to Harry, how he managed to dodge 20 defenders is anyones guess and will be talked about for a long time to come.

Special thanks as always to the coaches Andy, Matt A. and Matt S. who do a great job looking after the team, and to the parents for providing positive pitch-side encouragement.
