The mighty Pershore U7 see off some lively opposition from Malvern with a few games of competitive tag rugby, and bulldog, with thrills and spills.

On a dry, if not chilly Sunday morning Pershore Under Sevens lined up against Malvern for the first game since their bitterly cold post New Year match at Chaddesley Corbett. Pershore were split into two teams of six and coached by the two Matts with an even mix of experienced and new players in each group.

Pershore Red Players: Jack, Olivia, Rowan, James, Nelson, Nat

Questions were asked whether the impressive defensive line that had been continually drilled would work during a game, however it was clear to all from the first whistle that the hours of immense effort the players and coaches have put in over the last two months had paid off. From the off, the Pershore Pirates ‘fishing net’ proved to be the achilles heel for Malvern, with the only thing faltering being the attempts of Malvern to find a way through. Time and time again Malvern probed the Pershore defensive line and time and time again they were either repelled or tagged leading to nothing but desperation. Pershore Pirates weren’t just ‘one trick ponies’ - coupled with the strong defense were some displays of blistering pace. There wasn’t one of the Pershore players who at one time or another didn’t leave the opposition questioning their tactics. After 15 minutes of playing and the team looking forward to their now customary end of game Jammie Dodger™, the match ended in Pershores’ favour.

Pershore Red 13 - 6 Malvern.

The inter-match game of bulldog saw plenty of snarling and growling (which was something to behold from a group of under 7’s) with Carter proving that size is no handicap to beating 30+ taggers.

Match two, saw the team take on a stronger more coherent Malvern side. With tiring legs and thoughts fixed firmly on post-match hotdogs, the Pirates tried to replicate their steadfast match one performance. There were several examples of individual brilliance during the second game but even with the usual touch line (parental) encouragement the team were unable to dominate as they had during match one. The score shifted back and forth between Pershore and Malvern for the full 15 mins and with the Pershore parents biting their nails to the quick the closing seconds saw Malvern sneak past the try line. Well done to all for an amazingly close game. I personally, am ten years older now!

Pershore Red 7 - 8 Malvern

Pershore Blue:

Pershore Blue gave Malvern Red the first position and quickly demonstrated that the defensive work they had done in the previous weeks training had paid off. The boys worked well as a team and managed to turnover the ball leading to a try from Charlie Smith the first half continued with both sides trading scores. Carter Adey and William Bishop crossing for Pershore. At half time honours were even at 3 each. Pershore’s defence was still working well and they were able to score every time they gained position. Ben and William capitalising on some good team play. Pershore went ahead when William completed his hat trick. Malvern were not ready to give up and when Pershore went to sleep on what they thought was the last position and were turned over for Malvern to score two unanswered tries they ended up with a 6 – 7 loss.

After what is becoming a regular mid session game of bulldog Pershore Blue smarting from their earlier defeat took on Malvern Green. The application, focus and teamwork paid off in spades excellent tagging from all and intelligent off loads in the tackle left Pershore 4 – 2 up at the half. William contributing 2 with Harry Oughton and Charlie 1 each. Pershore continued to push on during the second half with 3 more tries from William another for Harry and 1 from Ben. Josh came close but was thwarted by a tag just before he crossed. At the whistle Pershore came out well deserved victors at 9 – 4.
