Rugby wins the day, with sportsmanship and other important values on show. Well, you can't win every game, but we do try!

With a hard frost from the previous night still lingering, no one was too surprised that it was another chilly start to a home game for the U7’s against Worcester. Half term meant their numbers were not quite as strong as previous weeks, but those that were available seemed still to be riding the wave of euphoria generated by the recent outing to Sixways. As always, many thanks to our own coaching staff and the coaches from Worcester, who ensure the kids are well looked after and just as importantly, have fun. Also, a big thank you to the helpers in the kitchen that always provide the ‘hungry rabble’ with post match hotdogs.

And so, I sometimes think just to make my life that little bit more interesting, the group was split into two teams. The Worcester team certainly looked the part and this, along with the rumours that they were trained by the Warriors, certainly seemed to give them the upper hand in the first match. Both teams initially struggled to settle into a rhythm and control some amazing individual performances by Worcester, meaning the opposition took a lead that looked like it might be humiliating for the Pershore Pirates. The half time whistle could not come quickly enough for some and after a few calming supportive words from the coaches both teams took to the field once more. For those hoping for a turnaround similar to that which England achieved against Wales several weeks ago, they were to be disappointed. That’s not to say there weren’t great improvements made by all, it was just that the recovery was just too little too late, meaning the Pershore U7 Pirates lost 7 - 9.

The inter-match game of bulldog saw both teams united against the coaches and if there was an award given to the best ‘bulldoggers(!)’ then Pershore would be the victors. With the second match fast approaching, there were questions asked about how some of the team would perform without their usual pre-match Jammie Dodger. For some players they would be entering unknown territory.

It was clear from the off, that whereas the first match had been challenging due to the pace and size of some of the opposition, the second match would be ref’d to a set of rules which most had not encountered before. Even for kids a few years older, a sudden change like this would be unsettling however, every single one of the Pirates took them on board. Sure there were the occasional lapses but both teams showed moments of brilliance and as they came off after the first half, although slightly trailing, their (unbiased!) parents agreed that it was the best rugby they had ever played. The second half went by in a blur of whistle blowing and restarts that ultimately saw the Pershore U7s narrowly lose once more. For most kids of this age this would usually lead to a chorus of negativity, yet they all graciously shook hands and hooray-ed their opponents. Sometimes adults can learn from kids, after all it doesn’t matter if you win or lose, it’s how you play the game.
